ONE NIGHT....9
It was 2:30, and Donna and Jason pulled up in front of Dr. Bailey’s office. Her office was located in the most prominent area of the city. It was right across form the Regency park, which was a favorite spot for the locals. Her office was a beautiful 2 story brick building with big bay windows that let a lot of natural sunlight into the building. Jason came around to my side of the car and opened the door for me. As I get out he grabs my hand and looks me in the eye and says; “Donna I love you, and no matter what happens today I need you to know that I will be here for you.” “I love you too. He kisses me and I knew that no matter what happened I could count on him. Hand in hand we walk in to the Dr. office. We get to the reception area, and I give them my name, and my insurance card. The receptionist gives me some papers to fill out and says that they will call me as soon as I give my paper work back and my file is created. I am nervous, and can barely write as the realization sets in that in a little while all my hopes can come true or destroyed. Jason takes notice of my hands shaken and takes the clipboard from me and proceeds to fill in the needed information... Once he is done he takes it up and the receptionist tells him it will be about 5 min. While waiting I take a look at the office, which is decorated so tastefully. The colors were so soothing it looked like a living room at a friend’s home, rather than a doctor’s office. The burnt oranges and reds and browns, flowed so well together. I have to find out who decorates for her.
Just then the door opened and a nurse calls my name. Jason and I go back with her. She leads us to a room that looks like a bedroom in a hotel. There isn’t one of those examination tables. There seems to be what looks like a twin sized bed with end tables and laps. The is a floor to ceiling window. A chaise lounge, carpet, and a beautiful antique dresser. There is also all the latest state of the art equipment as well. The nurse tells me the gowns are in the closet, and that I can hang my clothes in there when I am done. In the closet I find silk gowns of all these pretty colors, and I pick out the jade green one. I hang my clothes and get on the bed and wait for the doctor. All the while Jason is sitting on the bed holding my hand. “We are in this together baby, no matter what.” “Thank you for saying that Jason. It really means a lot to me to hear you say that.”
There is a knock on the door and a woman enters. She is a stunning woman with long dark hair and these hazel green eyes that seem to see right through to your soul. She shakes hands with Jason, and then turns to me. “Good afternoon Mrs. Brooks, Mr. brooks”
“Please call me Donna, and this is Jason.”
“Ok.” She smiles. “How are we feeling today?” “Nervous and anxious.” “I understand that you are nervous.” “I received your file from the hospital this morning, and looking at the test results; which are very accurate, you are pregnant.” “Now it has been brought to my attention that you think the test is wrong, because you were told you could not conceive?” “Yes Dr. Bailey, that’s correct.” “Its Patricia, she said with a smile. “Can you tell me why that is?” “Well no to get into too much detail, but when I was a young girl I was rapped by a friend of the family, and a few of his friends. I was taken to the hospital; after I was found covered in blood. The doctor told my mom that I would never have children, because there was too much damage done to my uterus.” “hhhmmm, ok.” “I am going to examine you and take a look at your uterus. After I run some test we will know what to do from there.” “I need you to lay back, scoot down to the end of the bed, and pull your knees up.” “You will feel the bed rise, that’s just me raising it to the height I need it to be?”
“Mr. Brooks you are welcomed to have a seat on the chaise or pull up a chair if you want to be close by.” “I’ll have a seat right here next to Donna.”
“Ok, well lets get started then.”
The first part of the exam, which included many questions, about the rape when I was a child, my sex life with Jason, lasted about 45 minutes. Then came the ultrasound and we were actually going to see if there really was a baby in there. The Dr. pressed a button and the light dimmed. she turned the screen towards us, and applied the gel to my still flat belly. then she put this wand on my belly moving it around. All of a sudden my world turned upside down, this noise came trough the speakers, and at first I did not know what it was then it dawned on me, it was a heart beat.
“Here we go, if you look right here, there it is, that’s your baby.” “So yes Donna; you are indeed pregnant.”
Donna did not know what to say. She felt Jason kiss her, but she was stunned. She felt as if she was being given the greatest gift of all. Every emotion imaginable was caught in her throat. She had no idea she was crying until she felt Jason wipe away her tears.
“By the looks of things you seem to be about 6 weeks along, give or take a few days.” “Now I don’t want to alert you but your cervix seems a little weak, and there is a little scaring in the walls of the uterus, which might mean you may have to be on bed rest soon.” “For how long?”
“Well, the baby is not that big yet but at soon as you hit your second trimester you may have to be on bed rest till you deliver.” “Now I’m going to run some more test, just to be sure; but so far everything looks normal.” “This does not mean you can go climb a mountain, get some rest, cut back on your hours and stress for now.” “I should have all the lab results by next week. As soon as I do, one of my nurses will call you to set up an appointment.” She tells me when the baby is due then leaves the room. I am still in shock, and Jason is beaming like a kid in a circus.
“Honey get dressed, and lets go home and celebrate.”
I get up to got to the closet and get my clothes, when Jason stops me. “Donna, I’m sorry.”
“For what.”
“For not being the best husband, for not being more supportive and understanding, for the 4 months we were separated after you told me you could not have kids. Instead of being there for you, I thought of myself. I let my anger dictate my reaction.” “I’m not trying to make excuses but, right now finding out that you are pregnant for sure, has made me realize how much I wanted to have a child, but not just with anyone but with you; my wife.”
“Thank you, Jason.” “I’m sorry too, for keeping such a big secret from you for so long and not telling you sooner. I’m sorry for diving into my career and forgetting about our marriage. I guess deep down inside, I kept hoping and praying that one day this day will come.” “I want you to know I never meant to hurt or deceive you.”
“I know baby.”
Then he kissed me. A deep, loving kiss. We hug each other, and I turn and walk to the closet to get my clothes, and get dressed. I realized then that we are going to make it. Our marriage will be stronger than before.
Leaving Dr. bailey’s office, we must look like the happiest couple, hand in hand smiling. All of a sudden the sun seems brighter; the sky has never been more blue. Everything seems perfect. Jason opens my door and I get in and put my seat belt on while he comes around to the driver’s side. He is holding my hand, and as we pull off; he kisses the back of it.
“It’s a good thing I came home early from my business trip baby.”
“What did you say Jason, I’m sorry I was in my own world there for a minute.”
“I said it a good thing I came home early from my business trip.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Well the Dr. said you were about 6 weeks pregnant, right?”
“Right”
“so that means that you got pregnant the night I came back from Chicago.” “Remember, that was the same night Brandon came by cause he did not know that I was back early?”
At the mere mention of Brandon, my heart stopped. Oh my god, how could I have not thought of Brandon? Shit. Brandon and I had slept together the day before Jason came home, and for three days before that. All this means is that there is a possibility that Brandon can be the father of my baby. Damn, just when everything looked perfect the my world comes tumbling down. The first chance I get I need to talk to Brandon. The last thing I need is for him to go and tell Jason that he could also be my child’s father. All of a sudden I feel my phone vibrate, and I pull it out and it’s a text message from Brandon; Hey Donna I’m checking to see how you were feeling. Jason told me you were going to see a doctor today. I think we need to talk. Please when you get a chance give me a call. ILY
ILY, means I love you, damn him. I am not going to let him ruin this for me. Damn but there is the possibility that this could be his baby.
Deep down inside Donna was not going to admit that she had feelings for Brandon. Feelings that she has battled since the day she met him. Thinking he was out of her league, she never told him how she felt. Then there was the fact that he was a known serial heart breaker. He was known to go through a town, and leave devastation behind like a tornado. But that’s when she met his friend, Jason, and he was more her speed. They liked the same things, had the same goals in life, and game fromm similar backgrounds. She knew she had a better chance at a happy life with Jason then she ever would with Brandon.
“You seem a little upset baby, who was that?”
“No one, just Christine at the office texting me to let me know one of my clients made an offer on a house.”
Her phone vibrates again. and its another text message. Hi Donna its Vanessa. You said that if I ever needed anything, to call you. So I was wondering if we could have lunch. I really need to talk to you. I want to tell you the truth about what’s going on, and I think you need to hear what I have to say.
“That’s weird. I just got a text from Vanessa saying that she needs to talk to me and tell me the truth about what’s going on.” Hearing this Jason swerved into the other lane and almost hit another car. “Jason, oh my god.” “Honey what’s wrong?”
“Sorry babe, I though I saw something in the road and tried to avoid it.” “Are you ok”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Wow I was scared there for a minute.”
“I’m sorry honey.”
“Its OK. Well anyway, I wonder what Vanessa wants to tell me the truth about.” “I’ll have to call her later and find out. Maybe we can have lunch or something.”
Jason’s heart was beating so fast it was pounding in his ears. There is only one thing Vanessa could possibly want to talk to Donna about. Damn that little bitch is trying to ruin everything. If it wasn’t for the fact that she was carrying his child he would fire her. Maybe he can pay her to leave town. Shit but what about the baby. He could never send his child away and never see him/her again. He has to think of something. As soon as he gets Donna home and in bed, he will make up some reason why he has to go to the office and go by Vanessa’s and talk to her. First he will call Brandon and see if he can come over and look after Donna for a couple of hours.
After 20 minutes of traffic, they finally pull into the driveway. All the while Jason is trying to figure out a way to get to Vanessa before she can call Donna. Jason helps Donna out of the car. He has his arm around her taking her into the house when she starts laughing.
“Whats so funny?” “Jason you are holding me like I’m your 90 yr old grandmother.” “Sweetie I’m pregnant, not old.” “I’m sorry but you are carrying precious cargo, and for the next 9 months I’m going to make sure that you are well taken cared of. Hell, I’ll carry you if I have to.”
“You are so silly.”
Once in the once Donna goes to the bedroom and removes her clothes. She pulls on some pajamas and gets in the bed, cause all of a sudden she is so tired. Jason comes in and lies in the bed beside her. He wraps his arms around her, and squeezes
“I love you so much Donna. I never though I could be as happy as I am right now.”
“Me too Jason, me too.”
Jason’s phone vibrates on his belt clip when he looks at it it’s his boss calling him. That’s weird cause his boss rarely calls.
“Jason brooks.”
“Jason, its Todd.” As Jason listens to his boss, Donna dozes off to sleep. He notices her sleeping and kisses her cheek. He writes her a note telling her that he will be back in a few hours, and that he will ask Brandon to come over and stay with her while he is gone, and that he wants her to stay in bed. He looks for her cell and finds it in her purse. He turns it off so that she is not disturbed while she is sleeping. He leaves the house, and literally runs to the car. He has to talk to Vanessa as soon as possible, but first he needs to get to this meeting with his boss as soon as possible. He calls Brandon and tells him to go over to the house and keep an eye on Donna
“Man r u crazy? Donna hates me right now. There is no way she will let me near the house.”
“Listen, Todd needs me in his office for a meeting.” “And Vanessa sent a text to Donna telling her that she needs to speak to her and tell her the truth about what’s going on.” “Right now I need to get to this meeting, and get over to Vanessa’s, and deal with her.” “All I’m asking for is a little help from you right now.” “Ok fine, but as soon as I get there, I’m going to hide all the knives.”
“Thanks man, you’re a life saver.” “There is a spare key under the flower pot next to the door.”
“Ok I will see you later.”
“All right, later”
