Monique was right. It was time for Robin to have some fun and stop worrying about what other people might say or think. She had been reading far too much into what was going on between she and the good ole dentist. She had just gotten out of a failed marriage, to which she had dedicated five years of worthless fidelity, only to have been lied to and cheated on. The aftermath of divorce had allowed her to fall into the group of delusional women who still believed that sex between two consensual adults equaled anything more than a good time. Sometimes sex was just sex and that is how Robin intended on going into her “relationship” with Ryan. With the blinders off, knowing full well she didn’t want anything from this man other that the unearthly orgasm he provided her whenever they locked their bodies together.
For that reason alone, Robin tried to make each of their encounters sexual. If she met him at his office after closing, then it meant sex on his desk. If she met him for lunch at the park during the week, then it meant a hand job in the car. If he came over for a visit to the house, then she’d sex him in the back seat of his car…after she was sure the kids and Monique were asleep, of course. She was so empowered by her new sense of freedom within their “relationship” that she had even locked the two of them in a Starbucks restroom to work off some of the caffeine from their Carmel Macchiatos. The time or place wasn’t even a factor for Robin as long as, when they spent any time together it was all about sex.
Unfortunately, Robin had chosen a man who was not in the market to be just her personal bootie call. Ryan was looking for someone to share his life with, while Robin was just looking for someone to share her climax with. He had made it clear that he wanted her to be his, something Robin wanted no part of but because she didn’t want him to take his addictive loving away, she found herself playing the part of female chauvinist. She lied to him and made promises she had no intention of keeping, until they were finished with the deed, when she would instantly catch a case of amnesia and have to go. She did however, save every other Friday night open to do something special for him something that seem to appease him. As long as she used that one night for an activity that didn’t involve sex, she ensured that they would be bumping uglies without interruptions until the next tinge of insecurity swelled within him.
Robin reasoned that she should have felt badly about what she was doing to Ryan, but the truth was she didn’t. As soon as, she had changed her train of thought to one that was all about her physical happiness, any concern or consideration for his feelings had gone out the window. It tickled her to think that this was how men must feel when they lead women on and she had to admit that it was a complete adrenaline rush; to tell him things that she didn’t believe and watch him light up from the promise in her lies. Now, she knew why men did it so often; it was quite liberating. Besides, she had just gotten the get out of jail free card in the monopoly game that was her hellhole of a marriage and she was trying to enjoy her newfound freedom.
Robin was in a good mood as she made her way to see her attorney, J.C. Winters. She figured Jay had finally signed the divorced papers and she could finally stop feeling like a slut for sleeping with her new boy toy. J.C. was a no nonsense kind of girl, so when she told her to come to the office, a small part of Robin was a little worried but she remained confident that her lawyer could tie up any loose ends that may have unraveled. When she had first met J.C. a year and a half ago, she had been surprised that she was white but impressed that she able to make her forget that fact almost as fast as she had realized it.
Robin took a seat, as J.C. closed her office door then made her way over to her desk and propped herself up on the corner. She pulled her reading glasses off before massaging the area between her eyes. She inhaled deeply, as though she had been defeated before she even began. Her whole demeanor worried Robin but before she could inquire about her behavior J.C. said, “Jason’s contesting the divorce.”
“Excuse me,” Robin said, both her brows raised in disbelief. She continued, “what do you mean, he’s contesting the divorce? He’s living with another woman. Why the hell would he be contesting the divorce?”
“His attorney says he’s wants to give the marriage another chance to work,” J.C. said, dropping her hands to a resting position on her lap. She had a strange look of uncertain knowing on her face, as if she were waiting for Robin to tell her something that she already knew. She gently cocked her head to the side before saying, “Let me ask you something, Robin. Are you carrying your husband’s child?”
Robin quickly snapped, “I’m not carrying anyone’s baby! And so what if I was! Even if I were pregnant, I still wouldn’t want to stay married to his cheating ass!”
“Robin, calm down,” J.C. said as she moved from her place on the edge of her desk and made her way to have a seat behind her desk. She still had a somewhat smug disbelieving attitude as she continued, “Okay, you’re not pregnant now but were you recently pregnant? More importantly, were you recently pregnant with your “husband’s” baby?”
“Yes, I was pregnant but no it wasn’t Jay’s baby,” Robin lied. She knew the law just as well as J.C. when it came to her situation. She knew that if she and Jay had sex during their separation that he could contest the divorce, dragging out the process for no other reason than to annoy her. She also knew that he had to be able to prove it and she wasn’t about to hand over the information that would allow him to do just that. Robin continued her lie, “I was hurt and lonely…I mean, shit! My husband was engaged to someone else and living with her…I just needed…I just slept with this guy I knew.”
“Did you tell the father about the baby?” J.C. asked, her tone more relaxed, almost relieved.
“No,” Robin replied, she herself becoming relieved enough to believe her own lie. She continued, “before, I could tell anyone I fell down the stairs and lost the baby.”
“Okay,” J.C. sighed. She moved some folders around on her desk before she said, “I think I can make this go away then.” J.C. slide her glasses back onto her face, giving Robin a quick look over before she said, “You’re looking good. Losing weight?”
“A few pounds,” Robin giggled.
“Well, you’re looking good but most women do when they’ve gotten rid of their no-good husbands. I can’t find the paperwork in this stack. Let me check with my secretary,” J.C. said before leaving the room.
Robin was pissed that Jay would try to deter the divorce proceedings after all of the bullshit he’d put her through. He was even living with the mother of the child he had while they were married so why would he possibly want to stay married to her. There was no way he had gotten over her sleeping with his cousin, Justice, and she was sure that he thought that the daughter they shared really belonged to his cousin. He had to have something devious up his sleeve but she didn’t know what. Robin knew Jay so she knew that his sudden change of heart had to have come from a place of vengeance but she didn’t have any idea what he could be planning.
Robin’s mind was racing until a picture in the silver frame stopped any and all thoughts she was having, cold. There in matching t-shirts and mouse ears was J.C. with her arm around Ryan’s waist with his arm around her shoulder while the other held what looked like a bi-racial child. Her heart stopped. She picked up the picture from the desk to have a better look. The almost instant urge to throw up caused her to immediately put the picture back in its place. She could feel the sting of tears building, as she had been once again been betrayed by a photo, yet again.
She hadn’t heard anything J.C. had said after that. She’d signed the paperwork and left the office in such a hurry that she hadn’t even said goodbye. Of course, that could have just been the guilt of knowing that she was fucking her lawyer’s husband. How had that happened? The only rule she had for what she and Ryan were doing was that he didn’t have sex with anyone else; a selfish rule but one she took very seriously and expected him to as well. Now, come to find out, he was married to the woman representing her in her own divorce. As she drove back to work, her mind was riddled with questions that she wanted the answers to.
How could he have put her in this position, knowing what her husband had done to her. She had told him all about how she had found out that her soon to be ex was not only cheating on her but also had another child that he had created during their relationship. She had cried every night for months when she had found out so now that she was the other woman; she knew exactly what kind of pain she would cause his wife if and when she found out. There was a list of things that Robin never wanted to be in her life and being the other woman was right up there with drug addict and prostitute. She didn’t want to be the reasons that another woman sat up night after night unable to sleep, trying to figure out what she did wrong to make her husband go to another woman. She didn’t want another woman to hate her for sexing her man, even though she hadn’t even known she existed until a few moments ago. Most importantly, she didn’t want J.C. to angry with her while working on her divorce because the last thing she need was an attorney with a grudge against her working for her.
She knew something was too perfect about him. She thought back to how put together he looked the first time he came over to her house and remember how the first thing she thought was that a woman had dressed him. She had overheard him whispering into his phone that he was working late but when she asked who he was lying to about his whereabouts, he had apparently lied and said that it he told his sister he was working late so that she wouldn’t keep calling. At the time, Robin didn’t think much of it because she did the same thing when Monique called whenever she hadn’t come home straight after work. Robin had been to his house and had commented several times that it looked as if a woman had definitely left her mark on the place and though she had never spent the night; she always felt as though she would be met with opposition if she had asked.
The sound of the horn from the car behind her forced her to snap back to reality and realize that the light was green. She made her way across the intersection and decided that she couldn’t wait until after work to confront her married lover. She made a U-turn and made the peddle hit the mat as she weaved in and out of traffic to get to his office on the other side of town from her attorney’s office. Her mind could only find thoughts of what she wanted to say when she saw him. The scenarios of what she would do or say as soon as she saw him. She wanted to punch him in the face and tell his ass off for putting her in the middle of a fucked up situation, making her the other woman without her knowledge and possibly interfering with her divorce. The more she thought about it, the more she began to wonder if he were somehow working for Jay. Oh, if she found out that he was connected to Jay in any way, shape or fun then he was going to need the federal witness program to save him from her wraith.
She screeched into parking spot outside his office. She left everything in the car except her key. She stormed pass patrons and a couple dental assistants having a smoke break outside. She did exchange any pleasantries or make eye contact with anyone, as she pushed inside the door ready to release her rage on the deserving party. She had the receptionist alert him to her presence and pretended not to hear her warn him of her foul mood. He came out immediately to walk her back to his office. They passed Karen on their way back but Robin was in such a huff that she didn’t even speak to her. In fact, she rolled her eyes; Karen had to know he was married and she had put on this big song and dance act about him being a good guy. A good asshole was more like it.
Ryan closed the door behind them as he asked, “What wrong? You look upset.”
He was just about to reach out to put his hands on her shoulder when Robin slapped him hard across his face before snapping, “You lying son of a bitch! I’m nobody’s other woman!”
Poor Ryan was completely taken back. He looked as if he didn’t know what to say or do. He placed his hand on the side of his face that was still stinging from her slap. Dazed his managed to say, “Robin, what was that for!”
“Shut up! You’re lucky I didn’t punch in the mouth! You’ve been married this entire time and didn’t even tell me, you sorry bastard! You’re just like my stupid ass ex-husband! I don’t know why I was stupid enough to think that you were any different than any other man; always thinking with you fucking dick,” Robin went off on her anger fueled tangent.
“Robin, what are you talking about? I’m not married,” Ryan said his brow wrinkled by confusion.
Robin wasn’t in the mood to be lied to so she wasn’t going to give him the opportunity to do so. She rolled her eyes before pointing her finger in his face saying, “Fuck you, Ryan! I don’t have time for these childish ass games you apparently want to play. Lose my name, forget my number and stay the fuck away from me! If I see you anywhere near me again, I’ll not only tell your wife what’s been going on between us, I’ll be a witness for her in the divorce.” Robin said as she ended her rant. She then attempted to make her way pass Ryan to the door.
“Robin wait,” Ryan said as he stepped in front of her to try prevent her exit. He continued, “I think there’s been some kind of-“ but before he could finish she kneed him in the groins with as much force as she could muster, which was apparently more than enough as he doubled over in pain almost immediately.
“Lose my number, Dick!” those were the last words Robin had for the dentist before she stormed out the exact way she had stormed in.
